Overview of the Middle School
Middle School alone can be a difficult time for many students, but it can be even more frustrating when a student has dyslexia, ADHD, and other language-based learning differences. We specialize in equipping these students with strategies that help them realize their strengths, overcome frustrations, and achieve academic and social success. We believe that every mind is unique and our academic programs are individualized to meet each student's needs.
"My teachers have helped me to understand how I learn best. I now have more confidence and can take on any new challenge. Highlands has helped me create a better future for myself."
Brooks, HMS Student
6th Grade - 8th Grade
The Middle School Program is a full academic program with a maximum class size of 12 students with a teacher and an assistant. This individualized program instills hope and confidence in students who struggle to learn and allows students to realize their own individual potential.
The intensity of this Program is maximized by spending half of the day in a small group setting of only 2-4 students per instructor featuring individualized instruction based on a continuum of skills.
The following subjects are spent in the small group setting:
Math - Individualized Instruction
Phonics - taught in a structured, sequential, systematic, multi-sensory manner which includes a phonemic structure of the English language, spelling, fluency, and handwriting
Comprehension - taught in a manner which includes reading and vocabulary development
Grammar and Written Expression - taught in Language Arts classes using a structured sequential, systematic procedure
The other half of the day is spent with their entire class and includes the following classes:
Mind That's Mine / Executive Function / Mindfulness
Special Area Classes including Physical Education, Art, and Music
