Stories : What People Say
“If I could have dreamed up a school for my son, it still would have fallen short of this school.”
Parent of former student
One of the first students to attend The Highlands School was an eighth grade severely dyslexic young man. Upon enrolling, his math was at a fourth grade level and his reading was at a first grade level. His mother wrote, “He has such great potential; it just needs to be set free.” By the end of the year, his math was at a seventh grade level and his reading was very close to a seventh grade level. He went to Harford Technical High School and graduated in auto mechanics. Read on to hear more of what parents and students say about The Highlands School!
- “[He] is very excited that he is able to do his 0, 1, 2 and 3’s in multiplication. He said to me, ‘Mom, I never thought that I was going to be able to learn multiplication and now I am actually catching on!’ Thank you for everything. I am so happy that he is doing so well. He has struggled for years.”

- “Thanks to all of you for helping me and my daughter. You have helped her to maximize and develop to her full potential. She is a much happier and confident young lady. We could not have done it without all of you.”

—Parent of 2008 Summer student
- “I LOVE school! I used to get beat up every day in my old school, but that never happens here. Everyone is nice. My mom used to root for me when I would bring home a “D” from school, but now I’m bringing home “A’s!”

- “It’s easy to say that The Highlands School was one of the biggest successes of my life so far. There is no way that I would be where I am now if I hadn’t enrolled in The Highlands School. I am a freshman at Calvert Hall College High School…one of the best high schools in the state and couldn’t be happier. I will never forget all the teachers who helped me become who I am today. Each and every one of them taught me to strive for excellence. They showed me that if you wanted and worked for something hard enough, you could achieve it. Today, I am aiming to attend the University of Notre Dame.”

- “The Highland School summer program is a wonderful community resource for any child who struggles academically or is lacking in academic confidence. I have witnessed many children whom I have evaluated and referred to The Highlands School over the years make substantial progress and become engaged and comfortable learners.”
—Susan R. Grant, Ph.D., Neurolinguist
- “Although no child would choose to go to school during the summer, the personal attention, encouragement and improvement in skills received by each student make the experience a positive and valuable one for them. I will continue to recommend your program and can assure anyone considering attendance for their child that it will be a worthwhile educational experience.”
—Diane E. Fowler, Director of Admissions, St. James Academy
